Blender has a wide variety of features that makes this a worth while tool to use. Its supports many of the other formats that profession animation companies use and has many of the similar tools that they use aswell. From apart of being a rendering engine it also has a great game engine aswell. The 2D formats it supports are TGA, JPG, PNG, OpenEXR, DPX, Cineon, Radiance HDR, Iris, SGI Movie, IFF, AVI and Quicktime GIF, TIFF, PSD, MOV (Windows and Mac OS X). The 3D formats that it supports are 3D Studio, AC3D, COLLADA, FBX Export, DXF, Wavefront OBJ, DEC Object File Format, DirectX, Lightwave, MD2, Motion Capture, Nendo, OpenFlight, PLY, Pro Engineer, Radiosity, Raw Triangle, Softimage, STL, TrueSpace, VideoScape, VRML, VRML97, X3D Extensible 3D, xfig export. May take a bit to learn though.
